Raytheon to upgrade Air Force weather data system

Raytheon Co. has won an $11.5 million contract with the U.S. Air Force to modernize its weather data analysis system to make it more efficient and improve forecasting.

Doing so will help “deliver advanced capabilities to the Air Force, enabling the Air Force Weather Agency to process and disseminate data from next generation meteorological satellites more efficiently, significantly reducing sustainment costs," said James Olson, director of Space and Environmental Mission Solutions for Raytheon's Intelligence and Information Systems business.

This will assist warfighters with making mission decisions.

Under the modernization contract, Raytheon will upgrade the Air Force Weather Agency’s current meteorological satellite capability and legacy systems, including new hardware and open source database and application server implementation.

These upgrades will allow the agency to distribute data collected by next generation weather satellites, including Suomi NPP and JPSS-1 and JPSS-2, Raytheon said.
