Lockheed wins EPA cloud email contract

Lockheed Martin Corp. has won a $9.8 million contract to provide the Environmental Protection Agency with cloud email services for 18,000 employees.

The new email and collaboration system will be up and running in early 2013, according to a message from EPA to its employees.

The agency expects the Microsoft-based system to save $12 million over the four years of the contract.

Lockheed won the contract under the IT Solutions – EPA II contract, a company spokeswoman said. She declined to name the company’s teammates on the project.

EPA said that moving email to the cloud has been popular with agencies because it has low security concerns, and cloud storage makes it easier for employees to access email, calendars and collaboration tools from PCs, smartphones and tablets.
