$10B NMCI successor creeps closer to release

The Navy expects to release in the coming days the final request for proposals for the lucrative Next Generation Enterprise Network, which will replace the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet contract.

Proposals will be due around July 13, according to a posting on SPAWAR’s e-commerce site. No timetable was released for when an award would be made.

NGEN has been delayed several times as the Navy has worked to get input on how to structure the contract, which could be worth $10 billion.

NMCI has been worth about $11 billion to Hewlett-Packard Co., which picked up the contract when it acquired EDS Corp. EDS won the contract in 2000 to run the networking infrastructure for the Navy and Marine Corps.

The network has 700,000 users and represents 70 percent of the Navy’s IT operations.

HP is leading one of the teams pursing the new contract. Other teams are led by Computer Sciences Corp., Harris Corp. and Lockheed Martin.
