Northrop pipes aboard former chief of Navy operations

Retired Adm. Gary Roughead had a 38-year Navy career including command of both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets.

Northrop Grumman Corp. has added retired Navy Admiral Gary Roughead to its board of directors. The addition increases the board to 13 members, 12 of whom are nonemployees, the company said in a Feb. 16 announcement.

Roughead, whose Navy career spanned 38 years, was appointed chief of Naval Operations in 2007. He served as the 29th chief of Naval Operations until his retirement in 2011.

He is one of only two officers to have commanded the both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets.

Roughead, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, also served as commandant of the Naval Academy and was chief of legislative affairs for the Navy Department.

"Gary Roughead brings to our board a deep understanding of the global security challenges our nation and its allies are facing," said Chairman, CEO and President Wes Bush in the announcement.
