Raytheon combines units to strengthen public safety business

Raytheon Co. is restructuring its Network Centric Systems business unit to create a new product line with the goal of increasing its sales opportunities in public safety markets.

The new product line, Security and Transportation Systems, will combine Raytheon's existing security solutions and civil communications businesses to create an even stronger presence in public safety markets through cross-selling capabilities to commercial and government customers and promotion of the development of new technologies and products, the company said in an announcement Sept. 6.

"We see increased opportunities to serve the public safety market more effectively through this new alignment," said Network Centric Systems President Daniel Crowley, in the announcement.

Security and Transportation Systems incorporates two major focus areas of public safety. The first is security solutions, with an emphasis on critical infrastructure protection, including ports and airports, border protection and other needs served by Raytheon’s ClearView family of security management systems.

The second area is interoperable communications networks and the equipment that allow first responders to communicate with one another in an emergency. The air traffic management business, which helps safely control more than 60 percent of the world's airspace, will also be part of the new unit.

The new product line will be led by Michael Prout, a Raytheon veteran of more than two decades who has worked with transportation systems, air traffic management and technology development, the announcement states.

Raytheon Co., of Waltham, Mass., ranks No. 4 on Washington Technology’s 2011 Top 100 list of the largest federal government contractors.
