General Dynamics to lead DOD divisions’ BRAC redeployment

Company will help 6,400 employees move from several locations to Alexandria, Va.

General Dynamics Corp. will assist with a major Base Realignment and Closure relocation under a three-year, $146.2 million contract from Defense Department’s Washington Headquarters Services.

General Dynamics Information Technology unit will create a turnkey enterprise IT network infrastructure for the more than 6,400 employees who will move from several locations in the National Capital region to the recently acquired Mark Center facility in Alexandria, Va., according to a company announcement today.

The contractor will provide design engineering and execution for the new location’s IT infrastructure, including installation and implementation of multi-level networks, systems, equipment and cabling; in addition to testing and information assurance on the installed networks and deployment of voice, video, data and audio-visual communications equipment.

GD IT also will be responsible for seamlessly moving users and their equipment to the new facility without interruption of operations.

General Dynamics will work in concert with Washington Headquarters Services to provide a resilient, survivable, flexible and secure information technology infrastructure, said Zannie Smith, senior vice president of General Dynamics Information Technology's Army Solutions Division, in the announcement.

The move of the Washington Headquarters Services was mandated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act. WHS will consolidate 11 divisions at the new Mark Center site.

When completed, the new $1.1 billion complex will span 1.7 million square feet.

General Dynamics, of Falls Church, Va., ranks No. 4 on Washington Technology’s 2009 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
