Harris IT award keeps DOD commissaries well stocked

$35M contract follows on completed award

Harris Corp. will continue to provide specialized information technology services to the Defense Department under a nearly five-year contract worth $35 million.

Under this follow-on award to a six-year completed contract, Harris will deliver network operations support that will enable the Defense Commissary Agency to distribute commissary goods to nearly 12 million customers in military communities around the world.

Harris’ network infrastructure support, management and maintenance provide the backbone of the commissary system, a company announcement today said.

The company optimizes store and support operations through its security monitoring, on-site assistance and technology support.

By providing reliable and secure telecommunications, Harris supports the retail point-of-sale system and services, debit and credit card transaction authorizations, e-mail, payroll and personnel management.

The system also handles product ordering, shipping, receiving, invoicing and billing, the statement added.

“Our secure network prevents unauthorized disclosure of data and access to sensitive business, personnel and customer information,” said John Heller, vice president and general manager of Department of Defense Programs at Harris IT Services.

Harris Corp., of Melbourne, Fla., ranks No. 13 on Washington Technology’s 2009 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
