Microsoft CEO: Four things every CIO should know

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offers his advice to government and industry CIOs as they move to the cloud.

As more agencies and companies are moving to the cloud, CIOs need to be aware of certain things as they begin to transition their companies.

It boils down to four considerations, said Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, speaking at Microsoft’s One Government Cloud event on Tuesday.

Nadella's advice:

Security and privacy

These should be top of mind due to the stringent requirements CIOs have to meet. “[The requirements] have led us to do all of the certifications, but it’s not just the certifications, it’s the operational security posture that we collectively have as put workloads into the cloud, so that to me is perhaps the most important dimension,” Nadella said.

Cloud platform

The second consideration is what kind of cloud you want to have. Satya talked about the popularity of the hybrid cloud. “That’s the reality for you; you want to have the flexibility, you don’t want to move something to the public cloud and then not be able to go back, you want to have the ability to tier the private and public cloud, so that’s another element,” he said.

Data

You need to know your data – where it is, Nadella said, what it’s being used for, et cetera.

Interoperability

Lastly, CIOs must be thinking about interoperability and openness of every layer of their cloud, Nadella said.
