State puts eyes on virtual desktop needs

The State Department has asked industry for input on the key specifications and requirements it should consider in a strategy for buying virtual desktop software solutions for thin client workstations.

The State Department wants the virtual desktops to provide flexibility, the ability to work independently of location, endpoint and the network, and also security. In addition, the department needs a desktop that manages its power usage, offers a state-of-the-art platform on which to offer legacy applications, and allows users to build an image on a variety of hardware.

The department is open to additional ideas. It’s even encouraging companies to provide information about alternatives to better define the requirements and solutions.

With the request for information, the department also researching which qualified vendors could meet its requirements.

The RFI was released April 21. The deadline for response is May 2.
