DigitalGlobe to win contract for human geography info system

DigitalGlobe is about to win a contract from the U.S. Special Operations Command to provide a human geography information system that marries “human” data with geographic data, allowing for better mission planning.

In an effort to better plan missions, the U.S. Special Operations Command is about to award a contract to DigitalGlobe for a highly specialized Human Geography Information System.

Under the contract, the company will provide the Command with geospatially referenced socio-cultural data on a number of countries for which there is a critical need for it, but where such data does not yet exist.

This human geography information system will use satellite imagery and marry it with “human” data and other information on an area’s history, culture, education, economy, religion, weather and political landscapes, according to GCN.

Specifically, the system will seek out information on political parties, schools, religious institutions, tourist areas, airfields, military installation, embassies, internet café locations, smuggling routes, and other areas of interest, GCN reported.

The contract was bid on by GeoEye Analytics, which was merged into DigitalGlobe in late January of this year. The company specializes in satellite mapping and operations and imagery data.
