Small businesses need to better protect their nets, says FCC chief

Companies must guard their systems from hackers and outside attacks

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski has called on small and midsize businesses to do more to safeguard their networks, intellectual property and customers' personal data, according to The Hill newspaper.

FCC convened a business round-table meeting May 16 to discuss the importance of protecting their computer systems from hackers and outside attacks following several recent high-profile data breaches at major technology firms.

Genachowski said the FCC has outlined a series of easy steps small and midsize businesses can take to minimize their risks.
