CGI Group Inc. will design, build and operate a chronic disease management system and portal in Ontario under a six-year, $46.2 million contract with eHealth Ontario, a provincial government agency.

The CGI implementation initially will be used to better manage diabetes care, according to a company statement released today.

As the first system of its kind in Canada, the CGI solution will provide alerts to physicians that will help them better care for their patients, resulting in faster diagnoses, more effective treatment and improved management for Ontarians living with diabetes, the statement said.

“This project will provide a secure, shared registry, accessible by authorized clinicians, to manage diabetes more effectively,” said Greg Reed, CEO of eHealth Ontario, in the announcement. “It is an essential component for Ontario’s electronic health records.”

CGI provides a full suite of health information technology solutions that reduce operating costs; advance the quality of care; and promote health through an emphasis on electronic medical records, health information exchange, quality initiatives and operational efficiency improvements, the statement added.
