L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. will assist the Commonwealth of Kentucky in creating a secure driver’s license under a six-year contract that could be worth approximately $33.7 million.

The competitively awarded contract calls for L-1 to provide a secure driver’s license with a facial recognition solution as part of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s effort to protect the public and prevent fraud, according to an L-1 announcement today.

Kentucky uses an over-the-counter system for issuing secure driver’s licenses that includes fraud prevention processes such as photo first image capture and enrollment. The state also uses facial recognition technology designed, developed and maintained by L-1 to prevent individuals from establishing duplicate identities, the statement said.

L-1 Identity Solutions, of Stamford, Conn., has worked with the Commonwealth of Kentucky since 2001 to make the state’s driver’s licenses one of the most secure and advanced identity documents in the nation, said Robert LaPenta, L-1 chairman, president and CEO.
