Hughes to operate Social Security learning network

Hughes Network Systems will provide operational support services for the Social Security Administration's distance learning network.

Hughes Network Systems LLC will provide operational support services for the Social Security Administration's distance learning network under an outsourcing contract potentially worth more than $40 million over the five-year performance period.

The General Services Administration's SATCOM-II contract calls for Hughes to provide total life-cycle management and maintenance of SSA's Interactive Video Tele-training Network. The satellite systems company will provide video and broadband satellite network solutions, satellite airtime, equipment, on-site staffing of the IVT network, and hub operation and maintenance.

In addition, the Germantown, Md., contractor will supply a two-way satellite data network application to support the agency's Continuity of Operations planning requirements.

The IVT Network reaches more than 1,650 SSA offices in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
