DOD to replace command system

The Defense Department will drop its aging Global Command and Control System and begin replacing it in 2006, Defense Information Systems Agency officials said last month.

GCCS' replacement will be known as JC2, or Joint Command and Control. JC2 will use Web services and fit with the Defense Department's plan for network-centric warfare, said Dawn Meyerriecks, DISA's chief technology officer.

The last full version of GCCS will come out in 2006, and the first block of JC2 will follow later that year, said Bernal Allen, chief of DISA's Enterprise Application Division.

The transition will be painless, he said. "JC2 will sneak up on you like a little kitty cat," he said. "It won't be a big bang but an evolutionary event."
