IT consolidation aids continuity

IT consolidation may help agencies counter last month's General Accounting Office criticism that they have inadequate plans to keep government running in the event of a disaster.

Consolidation has worked for Pennsylvania, said former state CIO Charles Gerhard. The state saved 15 percent to 20 percent by consolidating IT systems, then plowed the savings back into redundancy and system backup initiatives, he said.

The savings that come from consolidating the Homeland Security Department's Border and Transportation Security's infrastructures will go to build better disaster recovery into the BTS infrastructure, said Mark Emery, DHS deputy CIO.
