Firms win GIG-BE subcontracts

Science Applications International Corp. chose four telecommunications companies to provide equipment and support for the $877 million Global Information Grid-Bandwidth expansion program.

Ciena Corp., Linthicum, Md., will provide optical transport systems. Sprint Corp., Overland Park, Kan., will supply optical digital cross-connect equipment with subcontractor Sycamore Networks Inc., Chelmsford, Mass. Qwest Communications International Inc., Denver, was tapped for the multiservice provisioning platform with subcontractor Cisco Systems Inc., San Jose, Calif. Juniper Networks Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., will provide Internet protocol routers.

The value of the work to these companies could reach $260 million over the next two years, Defense Department officials said.
