The announcement follows the nominations and appointments of other high-level positions in the new department, including the naming of Janet Hale as undersecretary for management, Asa Hutchinson as undersecretary for border and transportation security and Steve Cooper as chief information officer.
McQueary, a former president of defense giant General Dynamics Corp. of Falls Church, Va., and a former board member of the National Defense Industrial Association, will head the government's domestic defense research and development.
Brown, the deputy director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will focus on the new department's efforts to integrate the federal response to emergencies by creating a national incident management system.
