Electronic Data Systems Corp., Plano, Texas, has named Albert J. "Al" Edmonds president of U.S. government accounts in the company's Information Solutions line of business. He will oversee EDS' business relationships with the federal government, including strategic growth planning and delivery of services.

Edmonds replaces Bill Dvoranchik, who is retiring after 30 years with EDS. The two were instrumental in helping EDS win the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet contract, an eight-year, $6.9 billion contract for networking and desktop services.

"Al will be a talented and energetic leader for U.S. Government accounts," said Doug Frederick, president of Information Solutions, EDS' largest line of business. "He and his team will help further position EDS to achieve even greater growth in this key area."

Edmonds has been serving as vice president in charge of EDS' Government Global Industry Group, with responsibilities for providing IT services and thought leadership to government activities worldwide. He served previously as vice president and chief operating officer of EDS Federal from October 1998 to December 1999. In that role, he directed all operations for EDS' federal government business.

A retired Air Force lieutenant general, Edmonds was president of TRI-COR Industries before joining EDS in January 1998. He also served as director of the Defense Information Systems Agency, manager of the National Communications Systems and director of the U.S. president's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.

Dvoranchik, who joined EDS as a systems engineer in 1971, served in a variety of leadership roles around the world. He became vice president of EDS Government Services in 1986 and was named president of EDS State and Local Government in 1997.

Marcia Tamblyn will serve as interim leader of EDS' Government Global Industries Group until a replacement for Edmonds is named.
