Trish Gilmartin Williams has been promoted to editor of Washington Technology, in a move that underscores the newspaper's ongoing commitment to the government systems integration market.

Williams succeeds Jack Sweeney, who has been promoted to the position of Group Editor. He will oversee the launch of a bi-weekly business newspaper covering the global commercial systems integration market.

Williams, who has been news editor since joining the publication in May 1996, has strong editorial management experience and spent 15 years as a journalist covering business and technology for a variety of Washington-based publications.

"As Washington Technology enters its 11th year, it will expand the breadth of coverage, adding new projects and strengthening the newspaper's coverage of the federal systems integration marketplace," said Publisher Tim Karney.

Williams formerly served as senior editor of Space News and congressional and military editor of Aviation Week & Space Technology. She was a founding member of the staff of Defense News, where she covered the Strategic Defense Initiative and related issues.

The St. Bonaventure University journalism graduate also was managing editor of three Gazette Newspapers and helped launch a weekly newspaper covering the business and politics of the global aviation industry.

Williams will oversee story development, special projects and the daily management of Washington Technology, effective immediately.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with this outstanding staff and build on a tradition of editorial excellence" Williams said.

Washington Technology is a fast-growing newspaper for the infotech services industry with a national circulation of 40,000 subscribers.

The bi-weekly business newspaper is published by TechNews Inc., which was purchased by The Washington Post Co. in September.
